Diaper Details

So, we’re planning to use cloth diapers as much as possible for this little girl. I’ve been really intrigued by all of the styles there to choose from, especially since many of them come from small cottage businesses or homemade from patterns. I got on a diaper sewing kick last year and have been slowly building up a small stash of fitteds and covers. I’ve been gifted with some gently used diapers from Jeni, handmade diapers from various online pals, and I’ve bought a few.

Now it’s time to take an inventory of what I have and come up with a plan for what I’d like to add to the stash over this summer. I don’t want to invest a ton of time or money on an extensive newborn stash, since we don’t know how big our girl will be. I think I’ll focus on covers for that stage and plan to use mostly prefolds. If that ends up working well for us, that would be great since prefolds are by far the cheapest option around.

Anyway, here’s a peek at what I have… it’s quite the hodge-podge of styles and sizes right now.

The prefolds (lower-right corner) and boosters (middle) can be used anytime, but these are roughly sorted into sizes. Fitteds and all-in-ones are toward the top, covers are toward the bottom.

The diapers that I’ve made myself are mostly from the Goodness Gracious pattern and I’ve been using Goodwill tee-shirts as the outermost layer. (I think they’re funny. Yes, I know I’m a dork.) I’ve made some covers out of PUL and flannel with the Poochies side-snap cover pattern, as well as some knitted wool covers. I have a few all-in-one styles with built-in covers, but I’m drawn more toward the separate diaper-plus-cover strategy because it seems more customizable and should allow us to get more use out of the covers between washings.

I want to sew some more fitted diapers this summer in a variety of sizes, but it’s a little bit tough not knowing yet whether this pattern will end up working well for us. Maybe I’ll try another pattern sometime too, just for variety’s sake. If you have a favorite, please let me know!
