Cables Completed

Complete

Stevie finally crosses the finish line! This is the pattern called “Stevie” from the Rowan Cork book, size medium. It was my first experience with cables, which turned out to be a lot less scary than I expected. Perhaps because I was focusing so hard on the cable panel, I found it was actually more of a challenge to keep the ribbing pattern straight. Go figure.

This has been 95% finished for a solid month now, but it was the patterned turtleneck that was holding me back. Once I finally clued in to the fact that the pattern was telling me to continue the cables on the front — but NOT on the back — of the neck, I finally got it.

Here’s a closeup of the pesky neckline:

A couple of things I’d do differently next time:

1. I would have used smaller needles and knit a bigger size. I had to go up quite a bit from the recommended needle size in order to get gauge, and in retrospect I think I would like the fabric better if it were a little more dense.

2. I would have added a few more inches in length to the torso. The sleeve length is plenty generous, but my tall hubby could have used a bit more length through the body.

Overall, I really liked this pattern. Charting out several repeats of the cable pattern onto graph paper made it much, much easier to keep my place. And the saddle shoulders were another interesting new experience.

People in one of my knitting groups (yes I have two) say that Cork is great. I am thinking about doing a cabled, hooded jacket thing from the Zoe Mellor book “Adorable Knits for Tots” that calls for Cork, but the new KnitPicks catalog is full of a bunch of new yarns including an alpaca/silk one that they recommend for the same pattern. What to do… Did you love the Cork? Will we see it on the model?

It’s a really nice design. And now that you’ve conquered your fear of cables, think of all the crazy stuff you can do!! How about Rogue?

The sweater turned out great! I love cables because they move fast and keep it interesting.

Oh my god, that picture of Bridget is so cute. And so “grey” next to the sweater. She looks like its official spokes-cat!
